Court Sentenced Orji Kalu To 12 Years In Prison For Embezzling Funds

A Lagos Division of the Federal High Court, on Thursday 5, 2019, sentenced a serving senator and ex-governor of Abia State, Orji Kalu to 12 years in prison for N7.65 billion fraud.

Justice Mohammed Idris who delivered the sentence had earlier declared him guilty of the charge in the case that had been on for 12 years.

Mr. Kalu was tried alongside his company, Slok Nigeria Limited, and Udeh Udeogu, who was Director of Finance and Accounts at the Abia State Government House during Mr. Kalu's tenure as governor.

In an amended 39 counts charge, they were accused by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission of conspiring and diverting over N7 billion from the coffers of the state.

In one of the counts, the EFCC alleged that Mr. Kalu, who was Abia State Governor between 1999 and 2007, "did procure Slok Nigeria Limited, a company solely owned by you and members of your family to retain in its account, domiciled with the then Inland Bank Plc, Apapa branch, Lagos, an aggregate sum of N7,197,871,208.7 on your behalf."

The prosecution claimed that the N7.1 billion "formed part of the funds illegally derived from the treasury of the Abia State Government and which was converted into several bank drafts before they were paid into the said company's account."

The prosecuting counsel, Rotimi Jacobs, said the ex-governor violated Section 17(c) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2004, and was liable to be punished under Section 16 of the same Act.

Apart from the N7.1bn, which he was accused of laundering, the ex-governor and the other defendants were also accused of receiving a total of N460 million allegedly stolen from the Abia State Government treasury between July and December 2002.

The prosecutor said they breached Section 427 of the Criminal Code Act, Cap 77, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 1990. The defendants had pleaded not guilty to all counts.

During the trial, the prosecution called 19 witnesses while the defendants testified on behalf of themselves.

In his judgement, Mr. Idris convicted and sentenced the first defendant, Mr. Kalu to five years imprisonment on counts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11, three years on counts 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, and twelve years on counts 34, 35, 36, 37 and 38, five years on count 39. All sentences are to run concurrently meaning he would be in prison for 12 years from the day of conviction.

The second defendant was convicted and sentenced to three years imprisonment on counts 24, 25, 27, 28, 30, 31, 32 and ten years on counts 34, 37, 38 and 39. The sentences will run concurrently meaning he would be in jail for 10 years.

Justice Idris further held that Mr. Kalu's company, Slok Nigeria Limited, the third defendant, be wounded up and all assets forfeited to the federal government.

















Breaking: SSS Bows To Pressure And Release Sowore, Bakare

The convener of RevolutionNow Protest, Mr. Omoyele Sowore, has been released by the SSS today December 5,2019 in Abuja.

In a tweet by Sahara Reporters, Sowore and journalist Olawale Bakare (aka Mandate) have been released from detention.

This development comes after a court issued a 24 hour ultimatum for the release of Sowore and Bakare who have been in detention since August 3, 2019.

On Tuesday, December 3, 2019, Sowore's mother also pleaded with President Buhari to release her son.

Court Roars To SSS Release Sowore, Bakare Within 24 Hours

A Federal Court sitting in Abuja has ordered the State Security Service (SSS) to immediately release Mr. Omoyele Sowore and his co-defendant, Olawale Bakare (Mandate), within the next 24hours.

Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu gave the order at the scheduled commencement of the defendants trial on charges of treasonable felony.

According to Justice Ojukwu, the SSS had no justifiable reason to continue to hold the defendants in custody, after she signed the warrants for the release of the defendants from custody.

The prosecuting counsel, Hassan Liman (SAN), had insisted that the SSS did not refuse to comply with the order of the court.

He insisted that no order of the court has been violated, adding that none will be violated.

According to him, the prosecution don't even want the defendants in their custody.

The trial judge Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu asked him why have they not been released, a question which left him tongue-tied.

She insisted that she signed the bail order and she does not understand why it has not been complied with.

Justice Ojuwku said the matter will not continue, adding that since today's matter is adjourned at their instance she will award a cost of 100,000.00 Naira against the prosecution.

"The failure of the prosecution to carry out the order of the court to serve the defence and in view if this adjournment is at the instance of the prosecution and in view of section 396 of ACJA, I will award the cost of 100,000 against the prosecution and in view of refusal of the prosecution to release the defendant this court will give the prosecution the next 24 hours to comply with the order of court," she said.

Justice Ojukwu insisted that the law cannot change for anybody and all must respect the law.

The case has been adjourned to the 6th of December for a report on the court's order.

Mauricio Pochettino Sacked After Five Years in Charge of Tottenham

English Premier League side Tottenham fire it's manager Mauricio Pochettino after serving five years with the Premier League club.

Tottenham have started disappointingly in the current campaign and they stand in 14th place at the league right now.

There has also being lot's of speculations going on that former Chelsea and Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is a strong contender to replace the Mauricio who is 47 years old.

According to Tottenham's management statement, "We were extremely reluctant to make this change. It is not a decision the board has taken lightly, nor in haste,"- Daniel Levy.

"Regrettably domestic results at the end of last season and beginning of this season have been extremely disappointing.

"It falls on the board to make the difficult decisions, this one made more so given the many memorable moments we have had with Mauricio and his coaching staff, but we do so in the club's best interests."

Pochettino was appointed in May 2014 and led the club to the Champions League final last season, where they lost to Liverpool in Madrid.

The Argentine's assistant Jesus Perez, and coaches Miguel d'Agostino and Antoni Jimenez have also left the club.

In a statement by Tottenham, said that they would provide an update on new coaching staff, "in due course."














A Mother of A Young Girl Has Been Caught On Camera Fighting School Security

A young girl who is a student of Queens College in Nigeria was denied entrance into the school premises by a security personnel of the school for improper dressing or appearance "fixing eye-lashes to school.

The young girl whose name is withheld, informed her mother, and immediately the impatient and mother with high temperament took her daughter back to the school to question why she was denied entry into the school, unfortunately it end up that the mother created a huge scene by going into physical combat assault on one of the security guard of the school.

Passers-by and onlookers rush in to separate the fight between the woman and the security guard who was seen basically trying to escape from the woman's fist and display of anger.

At the end of it all, the school authority has to send the girl home with her mother.

Three Arrested In Cambodia For Smuggling Methamphetamine Inside Speaker

A Nigerian has being identified among the three arrested for smuggling methamphetamine, concealing them inside musical speaker in Cambodia. The Nigerian was arrested alongside two others whom are female.

The 26 years old Nigerian man, Ndukwu Jonathan Chukwujekwu was arrested in Cambodia, Pok Sreyleak 28, and Non Srey Nou 20, who were transporting the drugs were caught and led the Police to his home.

The speaker being sent from Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh City was been seized by the police in Cambodia. When the speaker was opened on Monday 11th November, 2019, 6 packets of methamphetamine weighing 5895.82 grams were found inside.

KOGI: IGP, INEC Boss Both Ran Off As SDP Guber Candidate Is Attacked By Thugs

It has clearly been noted that all is not looking good for the upcoming Gubernatorial election in Kogi State as signs of violence started showing up everywhere within the state.

The stakeholders meeting taking place in Lokoja, Kogi State capital, which had in attendance: the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, and National Chairman, Independence National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu was disrupted by suspected political thugs of the rural party of the state.

It was reported that trouble started when the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), was prevented from entering the event hall of Idrinana Hotel venue of the meeting, which resulted in altercation between SDP governorship candidate Natasha Akpoti and suspected thugs who stood among security personnel at the entrance of the hall.

The group of people wearing plain clothes in between the security personnel tried to prevail on her to go back, plea which she rejected, saying she was duly invited for the meeting.

It was at this point that the police released tear gas to disperse the surging crowed while all those at the high table including the Inspector general of police and INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu ran for cover.

The Chairman of SDP, Mouktar Atimah was manhandled and beaten up while trying to mediate.

Speaking shortly after the incident, Atimah said that what happened showed the extent to which our society had got rotten.

He is yet to gain enough strength to talk extensively when journalist sought to speak with him.

Speaking to Sahara Reporters, the SDP candidate said she was attacked by fierce looking thugs led by one Ojo, said to be a brother to the Chief of Staff to Kogi State Governor.

She said, "I was at the venue of the INEC's stakeholders meeting taking place at Idrinana Hotel, Lokoja, when I was attacked.

"I was pulled out and pushed twice to the ground by the thugs.

"The thugs were about 30 in number and the security operatives were over 500."

Natasha Akpoti lamented that the security operatives refused to intervene and lay off the thugs while she was being attacked. She added, "Not one security stepped forward to stop the attack."



















People's Democratic Party Has Expels Ize-Iyamu From It's Party

The People's Democratic Party (PDP) is not taking the rumoured defection of their Guber candidate in the last election, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), lightly.

In a recent development, the PDP, Edo State Chapter has announced the expulsion of Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu from the party following his refusal to refute nor confirm his purported defection to the APC.

According to a statement by the Edo State Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Chris Nehikhare, he said the expulsion will remain until Ize-Iyamu "acknowledges, accepts and addresses the issue of his decamping to APC."

The statement read;

"In the last few days, the Edo State PDP Chapter has been inundated with calls and enquiries regarding the stories trending both in print and social media as it concerns one of our leaders, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

"The party leadership has patiently waited to hear or read his reaction to confirm or deny the stories, but to no avail.

"We boast of being a party of men and women of integrity and high moral standing. It is a brand we have earned and wish to maintain.

"As a result of the "uneasy quiet" from our dear pastor and the impression our silence will send to our teeming supporters and followers, Edo State PDP is left with no option but to announce the "Expulsion" of Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu from all PDP related activities with immediate effect, until he Acknowledges, Accepts and Addresses the issue of his decamping to APC.

"This decision has been taken without prejudice."

The Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has suspended the National Chairman of the party, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, over his role in the crisis rocking the party state chapter.

The decision followed the vote of no confidence passed on Comrade Adams Oshiomhole by the Chairmen of the APC in the 18 Local Government Areas of Edo State.

According to a statement signed by Edo APC Chairman, Anselm Ojezua and Assistant State Secretary, Ikuenode Anthony, "Consequent on the development, the State Executive Committee has adopted the vote of no confidence passed on him and the subsisting suspension order from the organs of the party in the state."

They said the decision was necessary to prevent a repeat of what happened in Zamfara State, where the party was unable to field any candidate in elections.

"Comrade Oshiomhole is the one behind the crisis in Edo APC. We have passed a vote of no confidence in him and he stands suspended from the party.

"We don't want what happened in Zamfara State or other parts of the country to happen in Edo State."


DSS Release Sowore And Save Nigeria Further Embarrassment Says Soyinka

Prof. Wole Soyinka has called on the Department of State Services (DSS), to obey court orders and immediately release the convener of #RevolutionNow protest, Mr. Omoyele Sowore.

The Nobel Laurette signed a statement, where he described the Department of State Services action as a display of crude, naked power.

The Professor accused the government of not wanting to release Sowore as the Government never thought his bail would be met as the bail test was clearly to fail.

Below is the statement;

"The weaponry of lies having been exploded in their faces, they resorted to violence, including, as now reported, the firing of live bullets.

"This is not a new cry. They must meet, debate, and embark on a binding pact of tactical responses whenever these two pillars of civilized society are besieged by the demolition engines of state security agencies. The sporadic, uncoordinated responses as in the case of Omoyele Sowore, the absence of a solid strategy, ready to be activated against any threat, these continue to enable these agencies in their mission to enthrone a pattern of conduct that openly scoffs at the role of the judiciary in national life.

"Result? A steady entrenchment of the cult of impunity in the dealings of state with the citizenry, both individuals and organizations. The level of arrogance has crossed even the most permissive thresholds. It is heart-warming to witness the determined efforts of "Concerned Nigerians" in defence of these rights.

"Why the desperation? The answer is straightforward: the government never imagined that the bail conditions for Sowore would ever be met. Even Sowore's supporters despaired. The bail test was clearly set to fail. It took a while for the projection to be reversed, and it left the DSS floundering.

"That agency then resorted to childish, cynical lies. It claimed that the ordered release was no longer in their hands, but in Sowore's end of the transfer. The lies being exploded, what next? Bullets of course.

"As I remarked from the onset, this is an act of government insecurity and paranoia that merely defeats its real purpose. And now, bullets? This is no longer comical. Perhaps it is necessary to remind this government of precedents in other lands where, even years after the event, those who trampled on established human rights that generate homicidal impunity are called to account for abuse of power and crimes against humanity.

"The protests for Sowore's release go beyond only acts of solidarity, they are manifestations of the judgement and authority of courts of law, under which this nation is supposedly governed. Either it is, or it isn't. The answer stares us all in the face. The principles that now fall under threat implicate more than one individual under travail. They involve the very entitlement of a nation to lay claim to membership of any democratic, humanized union.

"Enough of this charade, nothing more than a display of crude, naked power. Release Omoyele Sowore and save us further embarrassment in regard of the world. An apology to the nation by the DSS and the judiciary would also not be out of place. It would go some distance in redeeming the image of an increasingly fascistic agency and reduce the swelling tide of public disillusionment.

"Let the rule of law reign. Failing that, have the honesty to proclaim the death of ordered society. Then we will all know just where we stand."

The viral video shown how Alhaji Mustafa feels on the total failure on the office of the minister, whose duty was to make sure there was power in Nigeria when he was appointed as Minister of Power in President Buhari's first tenure.

He said Alhaji Aliko Dangote has being calling him always to complain about the bad state of Nigerian roads which are not good for motorist and trucks to ply. He said because of people like Fashola, that's why people are calling and addressing his brother the President bad names, simply because people as Fashola fails to do their jobs.

He further says due to the level of bad roads in the country, vehicles that carry cement, rice, sugar, indomie and other goods are sinking everywhere. He says Fashola has made this government the worst in Nigeria, he said he will not allow Fashola to continue to rubbish this government.

He urge Fashola to stand up and go to work immediately within 48 hours, that because of Fashola Nigerians are suffering.

Ghanaian Traders Union Again Shut Down More Nigerian's Shops

The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) yesterday shutdown fifteen more shops belonging to Nigerians by it's members at Opera Square in Accra, bringing the number of shops to about 70 in total.

The latest showdown is part of GUTA's plan to cripple Nigerian businesses in the nation's capital.

Nigerian businesses at the Tip Toe Lane at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle are believed to be the next in line, as it was gathered that GUTA plans to lock up the Nigerian shops in the area today. The national president of the Nigerian Union of Traders Association in Ghana (NUTAG), Chukwuemeka Nnaji, has advised his members to close their shops today to avoid destruction of their goods and businesses.

Meanwhile, the timely intervention of police officers and the Nigerian Mission in Ghana averted a major clash between members of GUTA and NUTAG yesterday.

Breaking: Prof Tam David West Former Petroleum Minister Dies At 83yrs

The consultant virologist of national and international standing, also lecturer of  University of Ibadan for decades, Professor Tamunoemi Sokari David-West is dead.

The former Petroleum Minister was aged 83.

The news of his transition was made known in a tribute by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The late Professor was a Petroleum minister as at when Buhari was military head of state between 1984 and 1985, at a time oil prices slumped to about $10 a barrel. David-West and his boss came up with a policy of 'counter-trade', to sell Nigeria's oil.

President Muhammadu Buhari expressed deep sorrow at the death of his ally and friend, a man he usually called "the indomitable Tam David-West."

"He had an indomitable spirit, stood resolutely by whatever he believed in, and was in a class of his own," said President Buhari of the academic, author of many books, and social critic.

He commiserated with the David-West family, the people of Buguma, Kalabari Kingdom of Rivers State, the academia, and all those who loved "the forthright Tam David-West."

President Buhari prayed that God will rest the soul of the committed nationalist, urging all those who believe in the ideals he puts together to do same, for the betterment of Nigeria, and humanity in general.

Before he became a Federal minister in 1984, David-West served as Commissioner of Education in the old River State. He also served as Minister of Mines, Power and Steel under Gen. Ibrahim Babangida regime.




Junaid Mohammed Says Northerners Will Not Pick Atiku Over Tinubu In 2023

Lagos: Elder statesman Junaid Mohammed has described as false a statement that the Northerners will give their votes to Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) if the 2023 presidential election is a two-horse race between him and Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos state.

Talking in a chat with Daily Independent, Junaid said northerners are rational people and do not vote based on sentiments but make their decisions after looking at an individual's track records.

According to him, while Tinubu has a lot to show for his governance of Lagos for eight years (1999 - 2007), that cannot be said of Atiku who was also vice president during the period.

"Northerners will pick Atiku over Tinubu any day? That is utter nonsense. I want to assure you that northerners are rational, responsible people and they have a lot of political sense. If the choice is going to be between Atiku and Tinubu, don't listen to anybody who tells you that automatically Atiku will win because Atiku's track records are not enviable."

"What are his track records? They will tell us he has a farm, a university in his state. How many indigenes of that state have been employed by that state?"

"By the way, how did he come about the humongous wealth he claimed to have commanded as a Customs Officer? How did he make it?"

"What has Atiku done now which was not considered in the last election and what capacity does he have now to deliver anything good for Nigerians? As far as I am concerned, he is part of the problems of Nigeria."

"Tinubu is a professional politician who has delivered. If you know Lagos 20 years ago and you look at Lagos today, you will not be able to recognize it. Tell me what Atiku has done in his own part of the country." 











Billionaire Otedola Gifts N5bn To His Daughters Foundation, Dangote Donates N100m

The business mogul, Femi Otedola has donated the sum of N5bn to the Cuppy Foundation, a philanthropic project of his daughter, Florence Otedola, popularly known as DJ Cuppy.

Mr. Otedola, who was represented by another of his daughter, Tolani, made the announcement during the 'Gold Gala,' an event by his daughter, at Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja on Sunday evening, to a standing ovation from guests in attendance.

Tolani said, "My father, Mr. Femi Otedola, has been at the forefront of supporting worthy causes.

"It is in this spirit that he will be donating the sum of N5bn to the children of Borno, Adamawa and Katsina through the Save the Children."

Among the guests were Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, CEO Save the Children, UK, Kevin Watkins, Mr. Femi Otedola, entrepreneur, Hajia Bola Shagaya, Ambassador Babagana Kingibe, and Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Niyi Adebayo.

More guest were Senator Gabriel Suswam, Representative of Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, Minister of State for Transport, Gbemisola Saraki, National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Adams Oshiomhole, billionaire businessman Aliko Dangote, and his daughter Hajia Halima Dangote.

Also present were Minister of Women Affairs, Dame Paulen Tallen, former Governor of Borno State, Gen. Buba Marwa, Group CEO, Oando Plc, Wale Tinubu, Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-olu, Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, and Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum.

DJ Cuppy's godfather, Dangote, who is the owner of the Dangote Group, also made a donation of N100m.

The businessman told guests that they should not just allow government to do everything as even government had "a lot of challenges."

Dangote further stated that "To whom much is given much is expected. It gives me great pleasure to be here supporting my brother Femi, making this kind of big donation. I believe we need more Nigerians to have big hearts to give back to the needy.

"People find it very difficult in Nigeria to give money away but the more you give the more God blesses you. Femi, you are no more a rich man. You have joined the league of wealthy men. I have said I will give more of my money when I pass away.

"To Cuppy, I must congratulate you for having a big heart to visit those children in Borno. She spent about four days with them playing with them. In the light of this, I am making a donation of N100m."

The young philanthropist, who is also an ambassador of the Save the Children UK, a non-governmental organisation, said her foundation, which was launched in August 2018, was inspired by a trip to Maiduguri in Borno State.

According to Miss. Otedola, she started the foundation as a way of giving back to the less privilege people.

She said, "Becoming an ambassador for Save the Children has exposed me to so many children around the world.

"I was able to visit Save the Children in Maiduguri with the help of my godfather Alhaji Aliko Dangote."

Osinbajo, in his address, told the guests that the event must refocus their minds on caring for the poor and malnourished especially in Nigeria.

According to the Vice President, in 2015, Buhari proposed the "largest social investment program in Africa" of about N500bn annually.

He added, "Yet we are far from where we ought to be. It is obvious that the government cannot do it alone. So, we don't need to be billionaires before we do our part. It is time for everyone of us to decide that we can make a difference to ensure that the poor and vulnerable are given a decent life."

Interview With Woman Different Pastors Used To Fake Miracle In Their Churches

Answer: Truly whenever I attend such churches I get healed but my ailment relapses after two days

Answer: Once they heal me, I feel no pains but after two days, the pains returns, the reason I continue visiting various churches for a permanent healing

Question: Are you saying this for a truth or are you going to continue visiting other Churches for more divine healing?

Answer: No, I won't, I am sure this current healing is permanent

BREAKING NEWS: Court Grants Omoyele Sowore Bail With Immediate Released


The convener of the RevolutionNow protest, Mr. Omoyele Sowore has being granted bail by court sitting in Abuja Nigeria.

It was a tough battle as Femi Falana stood strong with strong words as he charge the judge with various instances of similar cases in the country.

The judge Tiawo Tiawo without exemption gave his verdict in favor of Mr. Omoyele Sowore.

BREAKING: DSS Application To Continue Detaining Sowore Strike Out By Court

The Federal High Court in Abuja strike out today Tuesday 24 September 2019 the application filed by Department of State Security Service (DSS) to further detain Mr. Omoyele Sowore, the convener of "RevolutionNow" protest.

This follows the withdrawal of the application by the state counsel.

Sowore's lawyer, Femi Falan (SAN), persuaded the court to order immediate release of his client as the prosecution is no longer interested to detain him further.

The counsel to DSS, however, challenged the oral application for release saying that a formal suit has been filed where Sowore is being accused of treasonable felony, a capital offence.

Mr. Sowore was arrested on August the 3rd 2019, two days before a rally tagged "RevolutionNow" for allegedly plotting to overthrow an elected government.

The prosecutor is asking the Court to deny the respondent bail due to the fresh charges filed against him.

In response, counsel to Sowore said the application for bail was withdrawn and the prosecutor's application for further remand was also withdrawn. He stressed that the new charges can't metamorphose in a remand order.

Mr. Falana urged the court to disregard the submission on the prosecutor. Mr. Falana said the prosecutor cannot ask the court to detain a citizen prospectively and in anticipation of the arraignment of the defendant order his detention.

Plane Carrying Around 600 Pilgrims Skids Along Runway In Northern Nigeria

The passengers were returning from a pilgrimage as the plane is said to have crash-land at the airport near Minna, Nigeria.

A double-decker plane carrying worshipers home from an annual pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia has crash-landed at an airport in Nigeria.

The aircraft was reportedly carrying more than 600 passengers when it crashed and skidded along a runway at the international airport near Minna.

Terrified passengers rushed off the Boeing 747 Jumbo Jet which is operated by Max Air and was flying in from Jeddah, according to flight-tracking website to safety.

The plane is reported to have suffered a technical fault in one of its four engines as it made its final approach to the airport near Minna.

A witness told The Nation that no one was injured or killed, but passengers were visibly shaken after escaping the damaged plane.

Part of the runway was damaged and there was debris on the ground following Saturday morning's crash landing, reported by newsmen.

An airport official told The Nation that a fire would have had catastrophic consequences because the airport doesn't have its own fire brigade services.

The official said: "The fire that would have followed would have spread to all parts of the airport because we don't have fire fighting vehicles in this airport.

The plane was carrying more than 600 pilgrims who were returning home from Saudi Arabia, added as reports gathered.

A report by Punch said at least 550 pilgrims were on the plane when it crashed at about 5am local time. It said the pilot was "devastated" following the incident.
An airport official told the media "I have never seen this type of thing in my life is only God and God alone that saved us from a terrible incident."

Nigerian state officials have launched an investigation into the incident. Max Air has not yet commented.

Based in Kano, Nigeria, the airline is a small carrier with eight aircraft in its fleet, flying domestically and to destinations in the Middle East. The annual Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia was held last month, attracting more than two million Muslims.




















Death Of 19yrs Old Female University Student Sparks Protests Across South Africa

The rape and murder of a young girl has shocked South Africa, a country that is already one of the world's most dangerous place for women.

According to South African, after days of searching for 19 years old University of Cape Town (UCT) film and media student, Uyinene Mrwetyana, who was last seen on Saturday August 30, 2019, investigators have confirmed that a man has confessed to raping and brutally killing her, and he also confessed to the crimes when he appeared in court on Tuesday, September 3, 2019.

Eric Ntabazalila, a spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in the Western Cape said the 42 years old man, reportedly an employee of the post office, has a prior conviction for armed robbery or robbery with aggravating circumstances, as well as a case of rape that was opened against him and later withdrawn, according to The Citizen.

Consequently, protests have broken out across South Africa after the body of the 19 years old university student was found dumped in a hard scrabble suburb of Cape Town, the nation's second city.

University of Cape Town student Uyinene Mrwetyana had not been seen in almost a week.

The suspect is a 42 years old man who worked at a post office in affluent Claremont, a suburb to the south of Cape Town's CBD. He has not yet been named for legal reasons.

He is alleged to have attacked the first year film and media student while at work, according to news.com.au.

The case has sparked an uproar among South Africans demanding action be taken to quell the country's femicide rate, which according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) is five times the global average.

It was gathered that Mrwetyana had gone to the post office to ask about a parcel. She was told the electricity was out at the branch and to return later, as accounted by a news outlet called News 24.

Unknown to her, the time between when she left and returned to the post office were to be her final hours.

South Africa is one of the most dangerous countries in the world for women.

When Mrwetyana went back to collect her parcel, her attacker was waiting. He allegedly struck her with a post office scale, knocked her unconscious and sexually assaulted her.

Later, he is reported to have handed himself into police and told investigators where her body was hidden. Police recovered the teen's remains dumped in Khayelitsha township, an impoverished neighborhood of Cape Town.

In the wake of the death, hundreds of people have flooded the teen's Instagram page with emotional messages, while describing her alleged killer as "evil" and a "murderer".

Local Cape Town TV has reported that angry residents in the alleged killer's township torched his home. Station eNCA reported that Cape Town's fire and rescue services were prevented from putting the fire out and forced to leave the area.

It has triggered national outrage about the safety of women in one of Africa's most developed and modern nations.

Thousands of South African women took to the streets, protesting about the Government's failure to deal with rising violence against women in the country.

Students at her university joined the protests, demanding that security on campus be boosted.

Mrwetyana's death has sparked a viral movement, with thousands of people taking to social media to express their anger with the hashtags #NotInMyName, #RIPUyinene and #AmINext.

BREAKING - Robert Mugabe Zimbabwe's Former President Goes Home At 95

Robert Mugabe, who led Zimbabwe with tough policies from 1980 - 2017, has died at the age of 95, the country's President announced this in the early hours of Friday.

"It is with the utmost sadness that I announce the passing of Zimbabwe's founding father and former President Robert Mugabe," Emmerson Mnangagwa said in his tweet.

Mugabe "was an icon of liberation, a pan-Africanist who dedicated his life to the emancipation and empowerment of his people. His contribution to the history of our nation and continent will never be forgotten. May his soul rest in eternal peace."

The former guerrilla leader swept to power in 1980 elections after a growing insurgency and economic sanctions forced the Rhodesian government to the negotiating table.

He was finally ousted in 2017 when his previously loyal military generals turned against him as the country was mired in an economic crisis.

Katsina And Kaduna Top List As Kidnappers Abduct Over 90 In August Alone

Investigation has shown that the level of kidnapping remained high in August last month as more than 90 people were abducted across Nigeria.

The incidents which happened in some of the states across the six geopolitical zones, showed the kidnappers becoming more daring in their methods of operation.

The events of August saw the abductors taking victims from their homes and the highways.

Among Nigeria's 36 states, Katsina recorded the highest cases with 50, who were taken from Wurma village in one night by a group of 100 bandits. Though the Police pegged the number at 15, locals in the village said no fewer than 50 people were kidnapped.

Following Katsina is the state of Kaduna, which has emerged one of the hotbeds of kidnappers as 20 confirmed incidents has taken place.

Zamfara State which before now had been a flash point had no major case given what was attributed to the deal between the state government and bandits.

There was also a significant drop in the number of cases in the South West, especially on Ife-Ilesa-Ibadan Expressway and Benin/Ore Expressway which connects the zone to the South-South and South-East geopolitical zones.

The relative calm on Benin-Ore Expressway was attributed to the clearing of forests at some hotspots.

Edo State Police Commissioner, Danmallam Abubakar, said the clearing helped to curb kidnapping and robbery previously experienced on the express road.

Within the month under review, major incidents hardly happened on East-West Road and Elele-Owerri Road which had witnessed alarming incidents of kidnapping in the preceding months.

However, Kaduna-Abuja Expressway remains the most unsafe road in the country as most incidents in Kaduna State, happened along the Kaduna stretch of the road.

Last Tuesday, a former governor of Gombe State, Ibrahim Dankwambo narrowly escaped being kidnapped by armed bandits along the road. According to one of his aides, the incident happened when the ex-governor was on his way to Abuja. It was also supported by a video clip as well.

A breakdown of the state-by-state findings by a journalist from Vanguard revealed that on the average, three Nigerians were abducted daily in the last 30 days.

On August 1: Igwe Sunday Orji and his wife were abducted in Enugu State.

The state Police Command confirmed the abduction of the traditional ruler, who is the king of Obom-Agbogugu, Agwu Local Government Area of the state.

On August 2: Five persons including a pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), were kidnapped. They were abducted along Sagamu-Benin-Ore Expressway on their way to the church's congress in Mowe, Ogun State.

On August 2: Abubakar Idris, a social media commentator was kidnapped in Kaduna. His wife, Khadija Idris said he was abducted at their residence near the Psychiatric Hospital in Barnawa neighborhood of Kaduna. The incident occurred at 1:00am as Idris was returning home.

On August 3: Armed men suspected to be kidnappers abducted a university lecturer identified as Abubakar in Kaduna State. The police authorities in the state confirmed the incident in a statement.

On August 4: Kidnappers reportedly killed a Kaduna-based Living Faith Church Pastor, Jeremiah Omilewa, along Kaduna-Abuja highway.

The late pastor was returning from Abuja with his wife and his son when the kidnappers forced their vehicle to stop and seized them.

On August 13: Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers abducted Mr. Ifeanyi Onyenankeya, a popular blogger in Imo State.

He is owner of two popular news blogs, Okigwe Arena and Imo Arena. He was reportedly abducted on Monday night at his father's compound, No. 3 Duru Close, Ekeagbara, Okigwe.

On August 14: Gunmen reportedly abducted another pastor in Kaduna State. The pastor was said to be in charge of the Nagarta Baptist Church Ungwan Makiri, close to Udawa in Chikun Local Government Area of the state. The pastor was said to have been abducted by heavily armed men numbering over 20.

On August 14: A Divisional Police Officer (DPO), was allegedly kidnapped along the Benin-Asaba expressway last Friday. The incident reportedly occurred between the Onicha-Ugbo and Issele-Uku stretch of the road. The name of the victim was given as Mr. Okoro.

On August 17: Ogun State Police Command said it has rescued three persons, who were reportedly kidnapped in Ode Omi, a border town between Lagos and Ogun State. The victims were identified as Abdulasis Sanni, the son of the Chief Imam of Ode Omi and two brothers, Jelili and Bamidele Adams.

On August 22: Armed men kidnapped the traditional ruler of Eziama Obiato, Mbaitolu Local Government Area of Imo State, Dennis Nwaba. He was kidnapped from his palace, at about 8:30am by four armed men, who came in a Honda Civic car, the Imo State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Vitalis Onugu said the two men, who used a bike to pursue the kidnappers, were shot by the armed men.

On August 22: Kidnappers abducted the wife of the Anglican Bishop of Ikeduru Diocese, Emmanuel Maduwuike. The victim, Mrs. Anuri Maduwuike, was abducted while she was going home from Owerri, the Imo State capital.

On August 22: Amember of Sokoto State House of Assembly, Aminu Bodai, was abducted by gunmen in Bodai village of Dange/Shuni Local Government Area of the state. The gunmen in the early hours of the day went to the resident of the lawmaker and abduct him.

On August 23: Three people were abducted in Enugu State. The victims are an Nnewi-based businessman, Ernest Otugo, his wife and his friend. Otugo is the President of the Ibite Olo Community in Ezeagu Local Government Area. The Otugos and their children were travelling with a family friend, identified only as Reuben, an indigene of Awka, Anambra State, to Enugu from Nnewi for a social event. They were travelling in a Toyota Venza car when they were accosted by the abductors at amokwe, in Udi Local Council along old Enugu-Awka Road.

On August 24: Seven persons were kidnapped in Kaduna by armed men in military uniforms in the highbrow Malali area of the state. It was gathered that the gunmen in military uniform blocked the access road to the Babatunde Fashola Housing Estate and intercepted a Honda Accord with Reg. No. LND 753 AL and five other vehicles and kidnapped seven persons.

On August 25: A Permanent Secretary in Enugu State Ministry of Lands, Augustine Ude, was abducted in Awgu axis of Enugu-Port Harcourt Road.

On August 25: A younger brother to Jauro, Turaki, a confidant of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar was kidnapped in Njoboliyo in Adamawa State. Umar Hammandikko was taken away by gunmen at Njoboliyo in Yola South Local Government Area of the state.

On August 26: The Chief Medical Director of Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital (ISTH), Prof. Sylvanus Okogbeni was abducted at Ramat Park, Benin City, in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of the state while returning to Benin. The Edo Police Command confirmed the killing of two of its officers attached to the CMD during the incident.

On August 27: About 7 persons, including three final year law students of the Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, one male and two female as well as four others, were kidnapped on the notorious Kaduna-Abuja highway.

On August 27: Bandits killed three travelers and kidnapped dozens on Kaduna-Abuja Expressway by Olams Farms.

On August 27: Two persons, who went to deliver ransom for the release of two children of a Kaduna-based bishop, were abducted by the same gunmen, who had earlier kidnapped the children. The two persons were abducted by the bandits after collecting the ransom from them. The bandits did not release the children of the bishop.

On August 27: More than 50 people, including pregnant women and children, were abducted in a raid on a village in Katsina State. The attack on Wurma Village in Katsina, northwest Nigeria, began around 11:30pm last Tuesday.
