BREAKING: DSS Application To Continue Detaining Sowore Strike Out By Court
Omoyele Sowore |
This follows the withdrawal of the application by the state counsel.
Sowore's lawyer, Femi Falan (SAN), persuaded the court to order immediate release of his client as the prosecution is no longer interested to detain him further.
The counsel to DSS, however, challenged the oral application for release saying that a formal suit has been filed where Sowore is being accused of treasonable felony, a capital offence.
Mr. Sowore was arrested on August the 3rd 2019, two days before a rally tagged "RevolutionNow" for allegedly plotting to overthrow an elected government.
The prosecutor is asking the Court to deny the respondent bail due to the fresh charges filed against him.
In response, counsel to Sowore said the application for bail was withdrawn and the prosecutor's application for further remand was also withdrawn. He stressed that the new charges can't metamorphose in a remand order.
Mr. Falana urged the court to disregard the submission on the prosecutor. Mr. Falana said the prosecutor cannot ask the court to detain a citizen prospectively and in anticipation of the arraignment of the defendant order his detention.

Plane Carrying Around 600 Pilgrims Skids Along Runway In Northern Nigeria
Airport Near Minna, Nigeria |
A double-decker plane carrying worshipers home from an annual pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia has crash-landed at an airport in Nigeria.
The aircraft was reportedly carrying more than 600 passengers when it crashed and skidded along a runway at the international airport near Minna.
Terrified passengers rushed off the Boeing 747 Jumbo Jet which is operated by Max Air and was flying in from Jeddah, according to flight-tracking website to safety.
The plane is reported to have suffered a technical fault in one of its four engines as it made its final approach to the airport near Minna.
A witness told The Nation that no one was injured or killed, but passengers were visibly shaken after escaping the damaged plane.
Part of the runway was damaged and there was debris on the ground following Saturday morning's crash landing, reported by newsmen.
An airport official told The Nation that a fire would have had catastrophic consequences because the airport doesn't have its own fire brigade services.
The official said: "The fire that would have followed would have spread to all parts of the airport because we don't have fire fighting vehicles in this airport.
The plane was carrying more than 600 pilgrims who were returning home from Saudi Arabia, added as reports gathered.
A report by Punch said at least 550 pilgrims were on the plane when it crashed at about 5am local time. It said the pilot was "devastated" following the incident.
An airport official told the media "I have never seen this type of thing in my life is only God and God alone that saved us from a terrible incident."
Nigerian state officials have launched an investigation into the incident. Max Air has not yet commented.
Based in Kano, Nigeria, the airline is a small carrier with eight aircraft in its fleet, flying domestically and to destinations in the Middle East. The annual Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia was held last month, attracting more than two million Muslims.
Death Of 19yrs Old Female University Student Sparks Protests Across South Africa
Uyinene Mrwetyana |
According to South African, after days of searching for 19 years old University of Cape Town (UCT) film and media student, Uyinene Mrwetyana, who was last seen on Saturday August 30, 2019, investigators have confirmed that a man has confessed to raping and brutally killing her, and he also confessed to the crimes when he appeared in court on Tuesday, September 3, 2019.
Eric Ntabazalila, a spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in the Western Cape said the 42 years old man, reportedly an employee of the post office, has a prior conviction for armed robbery or robbery with aggravating circumstances, as well as a case of rape that was opened against him and later withdrawn, according to The Citizen.
Consequently, protests have broken out across South Africa after the body of the 19 years old university student was found dumped in a hard scrabble suburb of Cape Town, the nation's second city.
University of Cape Town student Uyinene Mrwetyana had not been seen in almost a week.
The suspect is a 42 years old man who worked at a post office in affluent Claremont, a suburb to the south of Cape Town's CBD. He has not yet been named for legal reasons.
He is alleged to have attacked the first year film and media student while at work, according to news.com.au.
The case has sparked an uproar among South Africans demanding action be taken to quell the country's femicide rate, which according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) is five times the global average.
It was gathered that Mrwetyana had gone to the post office to ask about a parcel. She was told the electricity was out at the branch and to return later, as accounted by a news outlet called News 24.
Unknown to her, the time between when she left and returned to the post office were to be her final hours.
South Africa is one of the most dangerous countries in the world for women.
When Mrwetyana went back to collect her parcel, her attacker was waiting. He allegedly struck her with a post office scale, knocked her unconscious and sexually assaulted her.
Later, he is reported to have handed himself into police and told investigators where her body was hidden. Police recovered the teen's remains dumped in Khayelitsha township, an impoverished neighborhood of Cape Town.
In the wake of the death, hundreds of people have flooded the teen's Instagram page with emotional messages, while describing her alleged killer as "evil" and a "murderer".
Local Cape Town TV has reported that angry residents in the alleged killer's township torched his home. Station eNCA reported that Cape Town's fire and rescue services were prevented from putting the fire out and forced to leave the area.
It has triggered national outrage about the safety of women in one of Africa's most developed and modern nations.
Thousands of South African women took to the streets, protesting about the Government's failure to deal with rising violence against women in the country.
Students at her university joined the protests, demanding that security on campus be boosted.
Mrwetyana's death has sparked a viral movement, with thousands of people taking to social media to express their anger with the hashtags #NotInMyName, #RIPUyinene and #AmINext.

Investigation has shown that the level of kidnapping remained high in August last month as more than 90 people were abducted across Nigeria.

Buba Galadima Says Corrupt Nigerian Leaders Can Be Attack, It's Part Of Democracy
Buba Galadima |
According to him, the attacks were part of Nigeria's protest against bad governance, adding that was also an expression of their demands for accountability from those in power.
Speaking with journalist, Buba said, "I want to assure you that even those of us who have nothing to fear or nothing to hide will be very apprehensive to visit certain places outside Nigeria because one is not sure when one will be attacked.
"I can tell you that these attacks on leaders are part of democracy. If somebody believes in himself, he has nothing to fear and would freely travel out to any country even if you are killed for what you believe. What am driving at is that our leaders should do better than they are doing or else, the law of Karma will catch up with them within or outside the shores of Nigeria.
"I am not supporting the treatment being meted out to the leaders outside Nigeria. What am saying is that the leaders should be very careful about their behavior while in office because the people are beginning to demand accountability from them."
On the expectations Nigerians should have on the performance of President Muhammadu Buhari in the next four years, the politician said. "It is my view that we have not seen anything yet. We have said many things severally and all of them have come to pass.
"The current leadership in Nigeria today is one of the most insensitive that this country has ever produced. It does not give a damn about anybody's feeling on any issue.
"However, the most important thing to note is that we have told the people severally that the man doesn't know what happens around him and it is manifesting.
"How can the president now say that all ministers who are recognized by the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria should be reporting to an individual whose office is not even recognized by the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria?
"Abba Kyari is the de-facto President of Nigeria even though the word chiefs of staff did not appear in any sentence in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
"In fact, it is even better than we have an Abba Kyari because if there was no Abba Kyari or Mamman Daura, only God knows what Buhari would have done."
