Natasha Akpoti (Kogi Guber Candidate)
It has clearly been noted that all is not looking good for the upcoming Gubernatorial election in Kogi State as signs of violence started showing up everywhere within the state.

The stakeholders meeting taking place in Lokoja, Kogi State capital, which had in attendance: the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, and National Chairman, Independence National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu was disrupted by suspected political thugs of the rural party of the state.

It was reported that trouble started when the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), was prevented from entering the event hall of Idrinana Hotel venue of the meeting, which resulted in altercation between SDP governorship candidate Natasha Akpoti and suspected thugs who stood among security personnel at the entrance of the hall.

The group of people wearing plain clothes in between the security personnel tried to prevail on her to go back, plea which she rejected, saying she was duly invited for the meeting.

It was at this point that the police released tear gas to disperse the surging crowed while all those at the high table including the Inspector general of police and INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu ran for cover.

The Chairman of SDP, Mouktar Atimah was manhandled and beaten up while trying to mediate.

People's Democratic Party Has Expels Ize-Iyamu From It's Party

Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu
The People's Democratic Party (PDP) is not taking the rumoured defection of their Guber candidate in the last election, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), lightly.

In a recent development, the PDP, Edo State Chapter has announced the expulsion of Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu from the party following his refusal to refute nor confirm his purported defection to the APC.

According to a statement by the Edo State Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Chris Nehikhare, he said the expulsion will remain until Ize-Iyamu "acknowledges, accepts and addresses the issue of his decamping to APC."

The statement read;

"In the last few days, the Edo State PDP Chapter has been inundated with calls and enquiries regarding the stories trending both in print and social media as it concerns one of our leaders, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

"The party leadership has patiently waited to hear or read his reaction to confirm or deny the stories, but to no avail.

"We boast of being a party of men and women of integrity and high moral standing. It is a brand we have earned and wish to maintain.

"As a result of the "uneasy quiet" from our dear pastor and the impression our silence will send to our teeming supporters and followers, Edo State PDP is left with no option but to announce the "Expulsion" of Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu from all PDP related activities with immediate effect, until he Acknowledges, Accepts and Addresses the issue of his decamping to APC.

"This decision has been taken without prejudice."

DSS Release Sowore And Save Nigeria Further Embarrassment Says Soyinka

Prof. Wole Soyinka
Prof. Wole Soyinka has called on the Department of State Services (DSS), to obey court orders and immediately release the convener of #RevolutionNow protest, Mr. Omoyele Sowore.

The Nobel Laurette signed a statement, where he described the Department of State Services action as a display of crude, naked power.

The Professor accused the government of not wanting to release Sowore as the Government never thought his bail would be met as the bail test was clearly to fail.

Below is the statement;

"The weaponry of lies having been exploded in their faces, they resorted to violence, including, as now reported, the firing of live bullets.

"This is not a new cry. They must meet, debate, and embark on a binding pact of tactical responses whenever these two pillars of civilized society are besieged by the demolition engines of state security agencies. The sporadic, uncoordinated responses as in the case of Omoyele Sowore, the absence of a solid strategy, ready to be activated against any threat, these continue to enable these agencies in their mission to enthrone a pattern of conduct that openly scoffs at the role of the judiciary in national life.

"Result? A steady entrenchment of the cult of impunity in the dealings of state with the citizenry, both individuals and organizations. The level of arrogance has crossed even the most permissive thresholds. It is heart-warming to witness the determined efforts of "Concerned Nigerians" in defence of these rights.

"Why the desperation? The answer is straightforward: the government never imagined that the bail conditions for Sowore would ever be met. Even Sowore's supporters despaired. The bail test was clearly set to fail. It took a while for the projection to be reversed, and it left the DSS floundering.

"That agency then resorted to childish, cynical lies. It claimed that the ordered release was no longer in their hands, but in Sowore's end of the transfer. The lies being exploded, what next? Bullets of course.

"As I remarked from the onset, this is an act of government insecurity and paranoia that merely defeats its real purpose. And now, bullets? This is no longer comical. Perhaps it is necessary to remind this government of precedents in other lands where, even years after the event, those who trampled on established human rights that generate homicidal impunity are called to account for abuse of power and crimes against humanity.

"The protests for Sowore's release go beyond only acts of solidarity, they are manifestations of the judgement and authority of courts of law, under which this nation is supposedly governed. Either it is, or it isn't. The answer stares us all in the face. The principles that now fall under threat implicate more than one individual under travail. They involve the very entitlement of a nation to lay claim to membership of any democratic, humanized union.

"Enough of this charade, nothing more than a display of crude, naked power. Release Omoyele Sowore and save us further embarrassment in regard of the world. An apology to the nation by the DSS and the judiciary would also not be out of place. It would go some distance in redeeming the image of an increasingly fascistic agency and reduce the swelling tide of public disillusionment.

"Let the rule of law reign. Failing that, have the honesty to proclaim the death of ordered society. Then we will all know just where we stand."

Junaid Mohammed Says Northerners Will Not Pick Atiku Over Tinubu In 2023

Dr. Junaid Mohammed
Lagos: Elder statesman Junaid Mohammed has described as false a statement that the Northerners will give their votes to Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) if the 2023 presidential election is a two-horse race between him and Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos state.

Talking in a chat with Daily Independent, Junaid said northerners are rational people and do not vote based on sentiments but make their decisions after looking at an individual's track records.

According to him, while Tinubu has a lot to show for his governance of Lagos for eight years (1999 - 2007), that cannot be said of Atiku who was also vice president during the period.

"Northerners will pick Atiku over Tinubu any day? That is utter nonsense. I want to assure you that northerners are rational, responsible people and they have a lot of political sense. If the choice is going to be between Atiku and Tinubu, don't listen to anybody who tells you that automatically Atiku will win because Atiku's track records are not enviable."

"What are his track records? They will tell us he has a farm, a university in his state. How many indigenes of that state have been employed by that state?"

"By the way, how did he come about the humongous wealth he claimed to have commanded as a Customs Officer? How did he make it?"

"What has Atiku done now which was not considered in the last election and what capacity does he have now to deliver anything good for Nigerians? As far as I am concerned, he is part of the problems of Nigeria."

"Tinubu is a professional politician who has delivered. If you know Lagos 20 years ago and you look at Lagos today, you will not be able to recognize it. Tell me what Atiku has done in his own part of the country."

Tolani said, "My father, Mr. Femi Otedola, has been at the forefront of supporting worthy causes.

"It is in this spirit that he will be donating the sum of N5bn to the children of Borno, Adamawa and Katsina through the Save the Children."

Among the guests were Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, CEO Save the Children, UK, Kevin Watkins, Mr. Femi Otedola, entrepreneur, Hajia Bola Shagaya, Ambassador Babagana Kingibe, and Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Niyi Adebayo.

More guest were Senator Gabriel Suswam, Representative of Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, Minister of State for Transport, Gbemisola Saraki, National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Adams Oshiomhole, billionaire businessman Aliko Dangote, and his daughter Hajia Halima Dangote.

DJ Cuppy's godfather, Dangote, who is the owner of the Dangote Group, also made a donation of N100m.

The businessman told guests that they should not just allow government to do everything as even government had "a lot of challenges."

Dangote further stated that "To whom much is given much is expected. It gives me great pleasure to be here supporting my brother Femi, making this kind of big donation. I believe we need more Nigerians to have big hearts to give back to the needy.

"People find it very difficult in Nigeria to give money away but the more you give the more God blesses you. Femi, you are no more a rich man. You have joined the league of wealthy men. I have said I will give more of my money when I pass away.

"To Cuppy, I must congratulate you for having a big heart to visit those children in Borno. She spent about four days with them playing with them. In the light of this, I am making a donation of N100m."

The young philanthropist, who is also an ambassador of the Save the Children UK, a non-governmental organisation, said her foundation, which was launched in August 2018, was inspired by a trip to Maiduguri in Borno State.

According to Miss. Otedola, she started the foundation as a way of giving back to the less privilege people.

She said, "Becoming an ambassador for Save the Children has exposed me to so many children around the world.

"I was able to visit Save the Children in Maiduguri with the help of my godfather Alhaji Aliko Dangote."

Osinbajo, in his address, told the guests that the event must refocus their minds on caring for the poor and malnourished especially in Nigeria.

According to the Vice President, in 2015, Buhari proposed the "largest social investment program in Africa" of about N500bn annually.

He added, "Yet we are far from where we ought to be. It is obvious that the government cannot do it alone. So, we don't need to be billionaires before we do our part. It is time for everyone of us to decide that we can make a difference to ensure that the poor and vulnerable are given a decent life."
