BREAKING: Police Arrest Rep Ikwegh Over Assault on Bolt Driver

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has apprehended Hon. Alexander Ikwegh, a representative for the Aba North and South Federal Constituency of Abia State, on charges of allegedly assaulting a Bolt driver, Mr. Stephen Abuwatseya. As per a statement issued by the spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, SP Josephine Adeh, the incident transpired when Abuwatseya delivered a package to Ikwegh's residence, leading to a disagreement regarding the delivery method. It is alleged that Ikwegh struck the driver and made disparaging remarks about the Inspector General of Police. The FCT Police Command has expressed serious concern regarding Ikwegh's behavior, indicating that he is currently being interrogated at the Maitama Police Station. "Initial investigations reveal that Mr. Abuwatseya was delivering a package to Hon. Ikwegh when a conflict arose over the delivery method. During this confrontation, Mr. Abuwatseya was reportedly subjected to physical assault. "The FCT Police Command has voiced significant concern over Hon. Ikwegh's dismissive attitude towards the office of the Inspector General of Police following the incident. "After allegedly striking the victim, he reportedly expressed disdain, stating, 'You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police,' which reflects a concerning lack of respect for law enforcement authority. "At present, the suspect is at the Maitama Police Station undergoing interrogation," stated the FCT police. The incident occurred on Sunday at Ikwegh's residence in Abuja. The Bolt driver, Mr. Abuwatseya, was delivering a package to the lawmaker when a dispute arose regarding the delivery method, during which Ikwegh allegedly slapped the driver. "You are just a common Bolt driver, a poor man with pride," the driver recounted the Abia State lawmaker as saying. The driver was later arrested and taken to the Maitama Police Station, where he was denied the opportunity to make phone calls. Police officers at the station accused him of attempting to confront a "senator" at his residence. Although he has since been released, his vehicle remains in police custody.

The Chairman of INEC Faces a Jail Sentence for Failing to Bring Charges Against Electoral Offenders.

Mobolaji Michael The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has initiated a contempt lawsuit against Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), for his failure to investigate allegations of electoral offenses that occurred during the 2023 general elections. The organization asserts that he has not identified the suspected offenders or their sponsors, nor has he ensured their prosecution.
On July 18, 2024, Justice Obiora Atuegwu Egwuatu of the Federal High Court in Abuja mandated INEC to pursue investigations into bribery allegations involving state governors and their deputies, as well as other electoral offenses from the 2023 elections. Additionally, Justice Egwuatu instructed INEC to appoint an independent counsel to investigate claims of electoral misconduct, including bribery, vote-buying, conspiracy, and undue influence related to state governors and their deputies during the 2023 elections. Despite these directives, INEC and Professor Yakubu have not complied with the court's ruling. The Federal High Court in Abuja issued a notice regarding the consequences of non-compliance, warning Professor Yakubu that he could be found in contempt of court and face imprisonment if he does not adhere to the judgment. The notice, directed to Professor Yakubu, stated: "Please be advised that failure to comply with the Orders outlined in the Judgment dated July 18, 2024, issued by Justice Egwuatu of the Federal High Court, Abuja, in Suit Number: FHC/ABJ/CS/583/2023, which is attached herewith, will result in a finding of contempt of court and potential imprisonment." In a statement released on October 27, 2024, and signed by SERAP's deputy director Kolawole Oluwadare, the organization expressed that it is intolerable for the court, which serves as the protector of justice in the nation, to be disregarded. It emphasized that a democratic state founded on the rule of law cannot thrive if INEC and its chairman consistently ignore or fail to comply with court orders. The statement indicated, in part: “Notwithstanding the service of the certified true copy of the judgment to INEC and Professor Yakubu, they have failed and/or refused to comply with it.” “The persistent incidents of electoral bribery and violence undermine the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system and participatory democracy. The recent allegations of electoral misconduct in Edo State suggest that INEC has gained little or no insight from the well-documented issues encountered during the 2023 general elections. “As the governorship election in Ondo approaches, INEC must address the ongoing electoral violations, put an end to the impunity of offenders, and safeguard citizens’ rights to vote and engage in political processes.” Justice Egwuatu’s ruling states, in part: “The essence of SERAP’s concern lies in the violence linked to elections in Nigeria, which obstructs citizens from exercising their voting rights, thereby hindering credible elections and, ultimately, the emergence of trustworthy leaders. “It is undeniable that electoral violence and the related crimes occurring during elections in Nigeria significantly hinder the nation’s development, both democratically and economically. “As citizens of this esteemed nation, SERAP and its members possess a legal interest whose realization or enforcement is directly or substantially contingent upon the fulfillment of public duties by INEC. “In seeking the execution of the public duty assigned to the electoral body, SERAP has exhibited a commendable spirit of patriotism.” The Electoral Act 2022 undoubtedly established various electoral offences. Provisions such as Sections 123, 124, 125, 126, 127, 128, and 129 delineate specific electoral offences under this Act. The adjudication of offences arising from the Electoral Act occurs in either a Magistrate Court or a High Court within the jurisdiction where the offence took place, or in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, as stipulated in Section 145(1) of the Electoral Act. According to Section 145(2) of the same Act, the prosecution of these offences is the responsibility of legal officers from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) or any legal practitioner designated by INEC. This provision places a public duty on INEC. Furthermore, Sections 24(d) and (e) of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution [as amended] affirm the rights of citizens to engage in activities that promote the welfare of their communities. These sections state that it is the duty of every citizen to (d) contribute positively and usefully to the progress and well-being of their community; and (e) assist appropriate and lawful agencies in maintaining law and order. Justice Egwuatu has issued the following orders of mandamus against INEC (the Judgment Debtor): AN ORDER OF MANDAMUS is hereby issued, directing INEC to appoint an independent counsel to investigate allegations of electoral offences, including bribery, vote-buying, conspiracy, and undue influence involving state governors and their deputies during the 2023 general elections. AN ORDER OF MANDAMUS is also issued, compelling INEC to conduct a prompt, thorough, and effective investigation into reports of electoral violence and other offences committed during the 2023 general elections, to identify suspected perpetrators and their sponsors, and to ensure their prosecution. An ORDER OF MANDAMUS is hereby issued, mandating INEC to promptly prosecute all individuals arrested for electoral offenses related to the recently concluded 2023 general election, currently held in the custody of the Nigeria Police Force, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, and other law enforcement bodies. It is important to note that on July 20, 2024, SERAP formally requested Professor Yakubu to utilize his esteemed position and leadership to immediately implement the judgment that instructs INEC to pursue cases of electoral offenses, including bribery, involving state governors and their deputies during the tumultuous 2023 general elections. SERAP initiated the contempt lawsuit against INEC and Professor Yakubu in accordance with section 72 of the Sheriff and Civil Process Act and Order IX, Rule 13 of the Judgment (Enforcement) Rules of Court. As of now, no date has been set for the hearing of the contempt suit.

TCN Explains Why They Have Not Yet Restored Power to the North

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has provided clarification regarding its inability to restore electricity supply to certain northern states. In a statement, TCN addressed misconceptions arising from media reports that indicated an indefinite power outage in parts of Northern Nigeria, which were inaccurately linked to comments made by Engr. (Mrs) Nafisatu Ali, the Executive Director (Independent System Operator), during a recent public hearing held by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). TCN firmly asserts that it is actively working to restore bulk power supply as swiftly as possible, despite ongoing security challenges. During her remarks at the hearing, Engr. (Mrs) Nafisatu Ali noted that the Shiroro-Kaduna transmission line, a key source of electricity for Northern Nigeria, had been vandalized by insurgents. In response to this situation, TCN has collaborated with the National Security Adviser’s office to enhance security in the area, allowing engineers to safely conduct restoration efforts. Engr. Ali highlighted the impracticality of deploying engineers without adequate security measures, given the risks present in the region. She dismissed any claims of an indefinite restoration timeline, reaffirming TCN’s commitment to ensuring a consistent electricity supply across the nation and indicating that security arrangements are being established. The ongoing power outage affecting Northern states for several days is attributed to the vandalism of the Shiroro-Mando transmission line, which is essential for electricity distribution in the region. The existing insecurity has hindered prompt repairs necessary for restoring supply. As a temporary solution, TCN has redirected bulk power supply through the Ugwuaji-Apir 330kV line, which has recently experienced a failure. TCN is working closely with the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) to facilitate access for engineers to the site of the vandalism, enabling them to carry out the required repairs while prioritizing safety during the process. We are resolute in our dedication to addressing these challenges, as we recognize the critical role of electricity in the socio-economic well-being of the populace and the significant disruptions this situation is inflicting on the government and all electricity consumers in the impacted regions. We assure you that we will persist in our efforts to resolve these issues and restore power supply to the affected areas. Ndidi Mbah General Manager (Public Affairs) 27/10/2024

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) issued a condemnation on Monday regarding the purported assault by Alex Ikwechegh, the representative for Aba North and South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, against a Bolt driver, an incident that has gained significant attention on social media. In a widely circulated video, the Honourable Member appears to be involved in an altercation with a Bolt driver who had arrived at his residence in Maitama, Abuja, to deliver an item. APGA, the political party under which Hon. Ikwechegh was elected to serve the Aba North and Aba South Federal Constituency in Abia State, expressed disapproval of the lawmaker's conduct, stating that it is inconsistent with the party's constitution and values. The party's response was articulated in a press release issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Mazi Ejimofor Opara, on Monday. The statement included, “Our esteemed party, the All Progressives Grand Alliance, has been alerted to a viral video depicting an alleged assault on a citizen by Honourable Alex Ikwechegh, who represents the Aba North and South Federal Constituency. “As a political organization committed to the respect of human rights, we unequivocally denounce the actions of our member and Federal Parliamentarian, Alex Ikwechegh, in this instance. “Our party is built on the fundamental principles of honoring the dignity of every individual, regardless of their social status, beliefs, or ethnicity. The recent footage allegedly showing Ikwechegh's assault on a taxi driver is entirely unacceptable and contradicts the core values of APGA. “In accordance with the constitution of APGA, the party leadership will establish a disciplinary committee to investigate this matter, and should the findings warrant it, appropriate sanctions will be imposed in line with APGA's constitutional provisions.” Opara stated that all members of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), as well as all elected officials representing the party, are required to uphold the utmost standards of decorum, civility, and integrity in both public and private interactions. “Our party will not accept any demonstrable behavior that contradicts the principles established by our founding fathers. In APGA, we are committed to supporting one another, and this principle must remain unchanged,” the statement emphasized.

Benue Attorney General Suspended by Governor Alia for Challenging EFCC and ICPC

Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has taken the decision to suspend Fidelis Mnyim, the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice and Public Order. The suspension stems from Mnyim's involvement in a legal challenge alongside other states regarding the establishment and legitimacy of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). On Tuesday, the Supreme Court postponed its ruling on a case brought forth by 19 states contesting the constitutionality of the laws that created the EFCC. Among the states, Imo and Bauchi have joined the case as co-plaintiffs, while Osun State has requested a consolidation of the suit. Conversely, three states—Anambra, Ebonyi, and Adamawa—have opted to withdraw their claims. The 19 states remaining in the case include Kogi, Kebbi, Katsina, Sokoto, Jigawa, Enugu, Oyo, Benue, Plateau, Cross River, Ondo, Niger, Edo, Bauchi, Imo, Osun, Nasarawa, Ogun, and Taraba. These states contend that the EFCC Establishment Act was derived from the United Nations Convention against Corruption and assert that the enactment of this law in 2004 did not adhere to the stipulations of Section 12 of the Nigerian Constitution. They maintain that compliance with Section 12 is essential when incorporating a convention into Nigerian law. The court has yet to deliver its judgment on the matter.

Halima Abubakar Says, "Pardon my Deception," in an Apology to Apostle Johnson Suleman.

Prominent Nollywood actress Halima Abubakar has extended an apology to Apostle Johnson Suleman of Omega Fire Ministries for defaming him. Abubakar acknowledged her role in disseminating false information about Suleman, which resulted in emotional distress for him, particularly through social media platforms. The conflict between Halima Abubakar and Apostle Suleman began in 2022 when the actress experienced health issues following a dispute with the clergyman. During her illness, Abubakar's family publicly urged Suleman to refrain from contacting her. Despite widespread speculation that the actress was suffering from an autoimmune condition, she refuted these claims by releasing her medical documentation. In her correspondence to Apostle Suleman, Halima Abubakar formally requested his forgiveness. She conveyed profound remorse for damaging his reputation and expressed hope that her letter might help mend the rift to some degree. The letter states: “I acknowledge that I made unfounded accusations against you and deeply regret my actions and the harm I inflicted upon you, your wife, Dr. Lizzy Suleman, your family, and the leaders of Omega Fire Ministry. “With this correspondence, I earnestly seek your forgiveness, understanding that my apology cannot reverse the pain, suffering, and distress I have caused. I implore you to find it in your heart to forgive me, as my judgment was clouded at that time. “I am sincerely sorry for all the pain and distress I have caused you, your family, and your ministry.”

After Being Buried Alive by a Herbalist for Fortification, a 26-year-old Man Passes Away in Enugu

In the Government Area of Enugu State, a tragic incident occurred involving a young man named Chikwado Eze, who reportedly lost his life during a failed fortification ritual conducted by a local healer. Reports indicate that Chikwado had recently obtained a visa for overseas travel and returned to his village to inform his father, Mr. Uwakwe Eze, of the good news. However, Mr. Eze insisted on performing a fortification ritual to ensure his son's success abroad and took him to a local healer named Onuwa. The healer allegedly stated that for proper fortification, Chikwado needed to be buried alive for a duration of one hour and thirty minutes. Regrettably, when Chikwado was exhumed after the designated time, he was discovered to be deceased. This incident highlights the potential dangers associated with harmful traditional practices and underscores the necessity of prioritizing safety and well-being over cultural or superstitious beliefs. In response to this unfortunate event, the Enugu State police have confirmed the incident and reported the arrest of both the deceased's father and the native doctor. The Enugu State Police Command has urged the public to remain vigilant regarding this recent occurrence and the handling of two separate murder investigations. A statement released on Wednesday by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, indicated that a native doctor, identified as Enuwa Odugu, aged 48, and Uwakwe Eze, aged 67, were apprehended for conspiracy and the murder of Chikwado Celestine Eze, who was 26 years old. The statement elaborated that the incident transpired when Uwakwe Eze brought his son to the native doctor’s shrine for rituals aimed at fortifying him with charms. Unfortunately, during the ritual, Chikwado was placed in a coffin and tragically died in the process. He was subsequently transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead by medical personnel, and his body was placed in the mortuary for preservation and autopsy. The native doctor has reportedly confessed to the crime and acknowledged his involvement in similar rituals in the past, attributing the victim's death to Chikwado's failure to adhere to specific ritualistic guidelines he had previously outlined. The investigation is currently ongoing, and the suspects will be brought before the court following the completion of the inquiries, stated Ndukwe.

Senator Ashiru is Charged by the NDLEA of Trading in illegal Dr-ugs, But Akpabio Defends Him.

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has called upon the Senate to extend an invitation to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and other pertinent organizations to provide evidence regarding the drug-related accusations levied against the Deputy Senate Leader, Yisa Ashiru. On Monday, the NDLEA responded to Ashiru's claims, in which he labeled the agency as “the most corrupt and compromised agency” during a recent discussion concerning a bill aimed at creating the National Institute for Drug Awareness and Rehabilitation. In a statement issued by its spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, the NDLEA asserted that Ashiru's residence in Kwara had been searched following intelligence that indicated it was being utilized as a drug distribution point. Babafemi further claimed that two aides of the senator were apprehended during the operation, while one managed to flee. “The senator's personal residence in GRA Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, was previously raided, resulting in the recovery of drugs and illegal substances. Two of his aides, Ibrahim Mohammed and Muhammed Yahaya, were arrested based on credible intelligence and surveillance that confirmed the senator's house was functioning as a drug hub for dealers and users,” the NDLEA statement indicated. Following a motion presented by Ashiru during Tuesday's plenary session, Akpabio dismissed the NDLEA's assertions, characterizing them as driven by personal animosity. During the same plenary, the Senate established a six-member ad hoc committee to investigate the allegations. The committee will be chaired by Enyinnaya Abaribe (APGA, Abia South), with members including Kaka Shehu (APC, Borno Central), Ireti Kingibe (LP, FCT), Afolabi Salisu (APC, Ogun Central), Ede Dafinone (APC, Delta Central), and Lawal Usman (PDP, Kaduna Central). In his remarks at the plenary, Akpabio stated, “I believe that any actions taken by the NDLEA should be grounded in your [Ashiru’s] assertions here, which highlighted the necessity for scrutiny regarding the integrity of NDLEA officials, especially in the context of the debate on establishing the rehabilitation center for drug users.” Nigerians appear to be unaware that the discussions taking place here are privileged, protected by immunity, and not open to public debate on television or radio. “You have not been summoned or charged by the NDLEA, and to our knowledge in the Senate, you are a respectable individual who abstains from alcohol. This matter is of great significance, and we must hold the NDLEA accountable.” Akpabio subsequently proposed the formation of an ad hoc committee to “invite the NDLEA and other relevant parties to substantiate these claims,” cautioning that should the agency fail to comply, “the Senate will take severe measures.” He further stated, “An injury to one is an injury to all.” Earlier, Ashiru had introduced a motion of urgent national importance, referencing Senate Standing Orders 9, 10, 41, and 52. He condemned the allegations made by the NDLEA as “deceptive and misleading.” In a personal explanation, Ashiru addressed the agency’s response to his remarks during the debate on the proposed bill to establish the National Institute for Drug Awareness and Rehabilitation. Ashiru clarified, “I voiced my concerns regarding this bill due to the substantial feedback from my constituency about the detrimental impacts of drug use and trafficking. “One of my constituents even informed me that over the past two years, he has witnessed 50 individuals lose their mental stability due to drug consumption.” He further detailed, “There are also clear instances of drug traffickers profiting from drug distribution in my constituency and beyond. “I contributed to the discussion, urging the Senate to investigate the NDLEA's operations and tackle corruption among its personnel. “I fully endorsed the bill aimed at creating another agency dedicated to drug rehabilitation.” Ashiru sought to defend his reputation, emphasizing, “I am 68 years old and cannot even recognize cannabis or any other drug. “Aside from drinking water, I do not consume alcohol, drugs, or even carbonated beverages. The claims made by the NDLEA are a direct response to my statements in the Senate." He additionally criticized the actions of the NDLEA, stating, “This represents an effort to restrict the Senate’s right to engage in open discussions regarding national matters. “The accusations made by the NDLEA are malicious, aimed at damaging my reputation and obstructing my complete involvement in parliamentary discussions.” Ashiru called upon the Senate to intervene in order to safeguard himself and other members from such baseless claims. In the previous week’s discussion concerning the same legislation, Ashiru referred to the NDLEA as “the most corrupt and compromised agency.”

According to Deji Adeyanju, Atiku, Kwankwaso, and Obi Ought to Reconsider Running Against Tinubu in the 2027 Election.

Deji Adeyanju, a prominent human rights lawyer and activist, has issued a warning to former presidential candidates Atiku Abubakar, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and Peter Obi regarding their aspirations for the presidency in 2027. He urged them to reconsider their ambitions, asserting that even a united front would not be sufficient to overcome President Bola Tinubu. In a statement posted on X on Wednesday, Adeyanju remarked, “It would be more prudent for Atiku, Obi, and Kwankwaso to invest their resources in betting on BetNaija rather than contesting against Tinubu and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).” He expressed skepticism about their prospects within Nigeria's electoral framework, emphasizing, “Even if they were to unite at this moment, it would ultimately be futile. Engaging in elections in a country where results on the IREV platform are manipulated is a waste of time. Edo is a case in point.” Additionally, he stated, “I find it increasingly frustrating to consider wasting my vote. Tinubu is merely beginning his tenure. The opposition's best opportunity to challenge the APC was during the last election, provided they had united.” He concluded by asserting, “Regardless of any coalition formed now, Tinubu and the INEC are unlikely to lose an election that Tinubu oversees.”

Amid the House of Representatives' Summons, Bobrisky was Reportedly Arrested While Escaping to the Benin Republic.

Nigerian crossdresser Idris Okunleye, widely recognized as Bobrisky, was reportedly apprehended on Monday morning while allegedly attempting to flee to the Benin Republic. Social media influencer Martins Otse, known as VeryDarkMan, announced on his social media platform that Bobrisky had been taken into custody. According to a source within the Immigration Service, Bobrisky was detained by the agency at the Seme-Nigerian border during a routine passport inspection. This incident occurred mere hours before he was set to appear before a Senate panel of inquiry concerning various allegations against him. There are ongoing speculations suggesting that Bobrisky was attempting to avoid questioning by the Senate. Attempts to contact Kenneth Udo, the spokesperson for the Nigerian Immigration Service, for confirmation were unsuccessful. In September, Trustbase News reported that the House of Representatives had summoned the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, the Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS), Bobrisky, and VeryDarkMan. The Joint Committees of the House decided to investigate claims stemming from a viral social media voice recording, in which Bobrisky purportedly admitted to paying N15 million to EFCC officials to have money laundering charges against him dismissed. This revelation sparked public outrage and raised significant concerns regarding the integrity of the EFCC. The allegations gained traction after Bobrisky, who received a six-month prison sentence earlier this year for currency abuse, asserted that he was permitted to serve his sentence in a VIP facility, further intensifying suspicions of corruption within the agency. In light of the increasing scrutiny, EFCC spokesman Dele Oyewale announced that Olukoyede had mandated an immediate internal investigation into the claims. The EFCC has also summoned both Bobrisky and VeryDarkMan to its Lagos Directorate to assist with the inquiry.

How a Commissioner Was Apprehended in an Incomplete Building With a Married Woman

The Commissioner for Special Duties in Jigawa State, Auwal Danladi Sankara, has been apprehended by the Kano State Hisbah Board on allegations of engaging in a sexual relationship with a married woman, identified as Tasleem Baba Nabegu, at an incomplete construction site. Abba Sufi, the Director General of Hisbah, reported that the commissioner was discovered with the mother of two through intelligence gathering, following numerous complaints from the younger brother of the woman's husband. The arrest was initiated after a formal complaint was lodged by Nasiru Bulama, the husband of Tasleem Baba Nabegu, who accused Sankara of maintaining a prolonged affair with his spouse. Bulama had submitted his grievance to the Kano State Police Command, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Hisbah Board. Sankara is set to appear in court on Monday, October 21, where he will confront several charges. Additionally, Hisbah has revealed that Sankara is under investigation for allegedly running illegal drug centers masquerading as hotels, referred to as Picklock and 360. “We have encountered ongoing issues with Sankara due to his operation of illicit drug centers under the guise of hotels, which are associated with prostitution and drug addiction activities,” stated the Hisbah Director General. The commissioner, who has refuted the allegations, is anticipated to undergo legal proceedings concerning both the purported affair and his alleged involvement in unlawful activities.

Nigerian Banks' Non-performing Loan Percentage Has Risen to 5.1%, Above the Prudential Limit, the World Bank Warns.

The World Bank has indicated that the capital buffers within the banking system have diminished. Furthermore, it has been reported that non-performing loans (NPLs) in Nigerian banks have surged to a concerning 5.1%. This information was disclosed in the Nigeria Development Update released by the international financial institution. The World Bank stated, “the ratio of NPLs to total loans increased by 0.6 percentage points to 5.1 percent in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. This figure slightly exceeds the prudential threshold of 5.0 percent.” Additionally, the World Bank highlighted the erosion of capital buffers in the banking sector. “The capital buffers of the banking system have been compromised due to elevated inflation rates, significant depreciation of the naira, and the rise in the NPL ratio.” The capital adequacy ratio for the banking system stood at 11.1 percent in the first quarter of 2024, a decline from 14.2 percent in the first quarter of 2023. The report also referenced the case of Heritage Bank, which resulted in the revocation of its license by the Central Bank of Nigeria. “In June 2024, the CBN revoked Heritage Bank's banking license, citing inadequate financial performance and a situation that posed a risk to financial stability.” “The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) was subsequently appointed as the liquidator in accordance with Nigeria’s bank resolution framework. At the time of its failure, Heritage Bank had 2.3 million depositors, with 99 percent of them holding deposits below the insured limit of NGN 5 million, total deposits amounting to NGN 650 billion, and a loan portfolio of NGN 700 billion.” The issue of loan quality among banks remains a significant concern in Nigeria. Recently, prominent lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, remarked that commercial banks in Nigeria have failed to recover over N5.4 trillion in loans. “AMCON is owed N5.4 trillion by affluent individuals. A few years ago, commercial banks faced potential collapse due to toxic loans acquired by members of the ruling elite.” In order to avert the looming economic crisis, the Federal Government established the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) to acquire loans amounting to trillions of Naira, which were made available by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). He noted that AMCON has struggled to recover loans totaling N5.4 trillion from approximately 370 corporate entities. Non-performing loans refer to those for which the borrower has failed to fulfill their payment or servicing obligations within the agreed timeframe.

BREAKING NEWS: Wike Gives Owners of Uncompleted Buildings and Underdeveloped Lots in the FCT Three Months to Develop or Lose Them.

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has issued a three-month ultimatum to property owners to commence development on their unfinished buildings and vacant lots within the Federal Capital City (FCC), failing which they risk losing their properties. The FCTA indicated that this measure was necessitated by the rapid proliferation of informal settlements and the occupation of incomplete structures and unutilized land throughout the FCC. This announcement was detailed in a document dated October 21, 2024, signed by Chief Felix Obuah, the Coordinator of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC), and was made public on a Monday in Abuja. The document states: “The FCT Administration has expressed concern regarding the swift rise of shantytowns and squatters within incomplete buildings and undeveloped plots across the Federal Capital City. “The Administration has also observed that these properties are being utilized as hideouts by individuals of dubious character, thereby creating a significant security risk for the residents. “In light of these issues, all owners of abandoned and incomplete buildings and undeveloped plots are hereby instructed to promptly develop and secure their properties within three months from the date of this announcement.

ASUU Petitions the Education Minister, Accusing Amb. Mbadiwe, the Pro-chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, of Misconduct and Power Abuse.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), representing the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU) chapter, has formally addressed a petition to the Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, concerning alleged misconduct, authoritarianism, and misuse of authority by the university's Pro-Chancellor, Ambassador Greg Mbadiwe, who also serves as the Chairman of the Governing Council. In the petition, dated October 21, 2024, and signed by Chairperson Comrade Kingsley Ubaoji, ASUU expressed concerns that if the troubling dictatorial behaviors exhibited by Mbadiwe are not addressed, it could jeopardize industrial harmony within the institution. ASUU contended that since the inauguration of the Councils of Federal Universities, Polytechnics, and Colleges of Education on July 4, 2024, the Pro-Chancellor has persistently ignored the Council's authority, “acting independently and making decisions without adequate consultation and approval.” The petition highlighted that the Pro-Chancellor has made specific unilateral decisions without the full assembly of the Council. “Section 2(1) of the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amendment) Act 2023, regarding the 'Composition of Council,' states: There shall be a council for each of the Universities consisting of- “(a) the Pro-Chancellor; (b) the Vice-Chancellor; (c) the Deputy Vice-Chancellors; (d) one representative from the Federal Ministry responsible for Education; (e) four individuals representing diverse interests and broadly reflective of the entire Federation, appointed by the National Council of Ministers; “(f) four individuals appointed by the Senate from among its members; (g) two individuals appointed by the Congregation from among its members; and (h) one individual appointed by Convocation from among its members,” the petition further elaborated. ASUU stated that at the time of the Council's inauguration, appointments had only been made concerning sections 2(1)(a) and 2(1)(e). It emphasized that despite this incomplete composition, the Pro-Chancellor, along with the four individuals appointed under section 2(1)(e), moved forward to appoint an Acting Vice Chancellor and announced a vacancy for the Registrar position. This action was taken without including representatives from the university's internal constituencies, specifically the Senate (4), Congregation (2), and Convocation (1). The petition indicated that ASUU NAU had sent a letter to the Pro-Chancellor in September, urging for the proper formation of the Council prior to any further actions being taken. It highlighted that the Pro-Chancellor was reminded of the legal provisions and warned that any actions taken contrary to the law would be deemed null and void and would face opposition. Although ASUU did not receive an official response to their correspondence, the Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Carol Arinze-Umobi, on September 11, 2024, promptly issued a timetable for the election to fill the vacant positions of representatives for the Senate, Congregation, and Convocation, as stipulated in Sections 2(1)(f), 2(1)(g), and 2(1)(h) of the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions)(Amendment) Act. The petition indicated that despite ASUU NAU's protest letter, the Pro-Chancellor persisted in acting independently by announcing the vacancy for the Vice Chancellor position prior to the election of members from the internal constituencies. It was lamented that the Chairman disregarded all efforts made by the internal members of the Council during the inaugural meeting to persuade him to retract the vacancy announcement or to issue a corrigendum to eliminate certain concerning eligibility criteria for the Vice Chancellor position. When the Senate convened on Wednesday, October 16, to address this matter, members voiced significant concerns regarding the authoritarian approach of the Chairman of the Council and the lack of rectification of the troubling eligibility criteria published for the selection of a new Vice Chancellor, which implied that the advertisement may have been influenced by an individual's curriculum vitae. In response, the Senate postponed the nominations and called for a reassessment of the concerning criteria in alignment with the established and widely accepted standards published by other universities and previously by NAU. The petition further noted that the Senate sought a joint meeting with the Council to address these issues; however, the Pro-Chancellor independently selected two professors to serve on the interview panel for the Registrar position, disregarding the Senate's authority. It was with great astonishment that we discovered the Chairman has scheduled the selection interview for the position of Registrar of the University on Wednesday, 23 September 2024, without prior consultations with other Council members. Our representatives within the Council have conveyed to us, and we trust their information, that the Council meeting has been postponed to a future date, which is still to be announced, in November 2024. As of the date of this correspondence, no notifications regarding any Council meeting or selection process have been communicated to them, the petition stated.

SECRET LE@KED: Who Gave the Pilot the Order to Change the Super Eagles' Flying Path?

The Tunisian pilot responsible for transporting the Nigerian team to Libya has provided insights into the events that resulted in the unanticipated rerouting of their flight to the remote Al-Abraq airport, rather than their planned destination of Benghazi. This diversion has sparked considerable debate since Sunday, when the Nigerian delegation, traveling to Benghazi for the important 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Libya scheduled for Tuesday, found themselves stranded for over 16 hours after their flight was redirected mid-journey to Al-Abraq, a small airport primarily designated for hajj operations. In a video interview shared by our correspondent and posted on X by Sports Journalist Pooja Media on Tuesday, the pilot clarified that the decision to divert was not made at his own discretion but was mandated by Libyan authorities. “The flight plan was to land at Benghazi, Benina, and we had received approval from the Libyan Civil Aviation Authority for this,” the pilot explained. “However, as we began our descent, we were instructed to divert to Al-Abraq, which is nearly 150 miles, or approximately 300 kilometers, to the east. This location was not even designated as our alternate airport, which is concerning,” he continued. The pilot characterized the diversion as potentially hazardous, referencing the fuel calculations that had been made for the original destination. “In aviation, we adhere to a flight plan and calculate fuel requirements for our intended destination, so such diversions must be avoided as they can compromise safety,” he remarked, noting that he had repeatedly sought clarification on the directive. “When I requested to land in Benghazi in accordance with my flight plan and authorization, they insisted that it was a directive from the highest authority, and that I must land in Al-Abraq.” In response to media assertions that the diversion was his decision, he stated, “All actions in aviation are documented; there is no possibility of concealment. I inquired multiple times—at least eight—and cautioned them that I might face fuel issues; they reiterated that it was a directive from the highest authority, and I had to divert immediately.” The pilot indicated that all pertinent communications and authorizations are recorded and can be presented as evidence if required. He stated, "The reality was that we were en route to Benghazi, and I possess the documentation of the approval. However, at the last moment, they altered their decision and changed the airport." In discussing the conditions at Al-Abraq, the pilot emphasized the difficulties associated with landing at what he described as an inadequately equipped domestic airport. "There is no Instrument Landing System (ILS), no air navigation approach, and no VHF Omnidirectional Range (VHR). We were compelled to execute a visual landing, which is particularly challenging at night under marginal weather conditions," he remarked, noting that the airport's lack of facilities left them with "no second chances" should the landing have failed. The pilot's experience in the region, having worked there for two years with a Tunisian company, proved essential in navigating the challenging landing. "It was certainly not a straightforward task. A pilot will recognize that landing under such circumstances was far from easy. Thankfully, we arrived safely," he commented. In a separate development, the Nigeria Football Federation has opted to withdraw the Super Eagles from the qualifying match against Libya. "The players have collectively decided not to participate in the match any longer, and NFF officials are arranging for the team's return home," the statement indicated.

In response to this unfortunate incident, students from Kwara State Polytechnic organized a protest at the headquarters of the state Police Command and the government house, calling for justice.

Nigerians Who Make More Than ₦100 Million a Year Are Subject to 25% Tax Rates.FG.

The Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, has announced that affluent Nigerians earning over ₦100 million monthly will be subjected to a 25% personal income tax rate if a proposed tax bill is approved by the National Assembly. This statement was made during a breakout session at the ongoing 30th Nigeria Economic Summit, organized by the Nigerian Economic Summit Group in collaboration with the Ministry of Budget and National Planning on Monday in Abuja. Oyedele pointed out that 90% of current taxpayers are individuals who should not be liable for taxation. He advocated for a more efficient and fair tax system within the country. He stressed the importance of finding a balance between reducing the tax burden on lower-income earners and ensuring that wealthier individuals contribute a fair share to government revenue. "If you earn ₦100 million a month, we will be taking up to 25% from the affluent. This is necessary to balance the budget," Oyedele remarked. He affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring that the appropriate individuals fulfill their tax obligations, highlighting that his committee is diligently working towards this objective. The proposed changes are anticipated to take effect in January 2025, contingent upon the bill's passage by lawmakers. The reforms are also designed to alleviate the tax burden on businesses. For middle-income earners earning ₦1.5 million or less per month, Oyedele indicated that their personal income tax responsibilities would be reduced, while those with higher earnings would experience gradual increases in their tax rates, ultimately reaching 25%. Lower-income earners would be entirely exempt from personal income tax. Oyedele further explained, "Currently, any VAT that businesses pay on assets—whether for constructing a factory, purchasing a laptop, or acquiring vehicles—is borne by them. This raises costs, leading to higher pricing. Once our reforms are enacted, businesses will receive a full 100% credit on services and assets." Individuals will be subject to taxation once a determination is made regarding their obligation to pay. It has been observed that nearly 90 percent of those currently fulfilling their tax duties are individuals who, under normal circumstances, should not be liable for such payments, he stated. This observation led to the conclusion that 97 percent of the informal sector ought to be exempt from taxation. There is a lack of understanding regarding our perspective; these individuals are not in a position to pay taxes; they are merely striving to make ends meet. He further noted that inflation has already imposed a chaotic form of taxation on the populace, diminishing the purchasing power of their income without the necessity of legislative action. In response to inquiries about tax incentives and waivers, Oyedele contended that indiscriminate incentives can be detrimental to the economy, and that eliminating superfluous incentives could benefit the business sector without adversely affecting government revenue. "We cannot accommodate all the incentives being requested. We believe that the most significant opportunity lies in the removal of these incentives, and that is precisely what we are undertaking," Oyedele remarked. Moreover, the corporate income tax rate is poised to decrease from 30 percent to 25 percent, which Oyedele characterized as a substantial benefit for businesses. Other notable tax reforms include the reduction or elimination of VAT on essential goods and services, such as food, healthcare, education, housing, and transportation. These essential services constitute a significant portion of the expenditures for lower-income households, and the proposed reforms are designed to alleviate their financial strain. However, Oyedele recognized that not all sectors would experience advantages from the lowered tax rates. For other goods and services, the VAT rate will be increased to maintain a balanced government revenue stream. Concerning the efforts of his committee to ensure that the appropriate individuals fulfill their tax obligations, Oyedele indicated that the team would employ primary data identification methods to accurately incorporate the correct demographic of taxpayers into the tax system.

BREAKING: CAF Delists Nigeria, Libya AFCON Qualifier

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has removed the second-leg match of Group D in the ongoing 2025 African Cup of Nations qualifiers, which was set to feature the Super Eagles of Nigeria against the Mediterranean Knights of Libya. Originally, the match was scheduled to occur in Libya at 8 PM, following the first leg held at Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Friday. In that initial encounter, the Super Eagles secured a narrow victory, winning by a single goal in the final moments of the match. However, the upcoming return leg has become contentious, as players and officials from the Super Eagles reported a challenging experience exceeding 14 hours at the airport in Libya, which ultimately forced their return to Nigeria. In response to the situation, CAF has initiated an investigation after the Libya Football Federation accused Nigeria of sabotage and threatened legal action. Additionally, the African football governing body provided an update on the matches scheduled for Tuesday, notably omitting the Libya versus Nigeria fixture from its announcements on social media.

EDO POLL: As it Goes Before the Tribunal, PDP Claims, "We'll Reclaim Our Stolen Mandate."

Following the results of the governorship election held on September 21, 2024, in Edo State, the People's Democratic Party (PDP) has submitted a petition to the state election tribunal. In a press conference on Monday, Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi, the Chairman of the PDP in Edo State, claimed that the party's mandate had been unlawfully taken, expressing optimism about its recovery. He further accused the All Progressive Congress (APC) of attempting to obstruct a court order that permits the PDP to examine election materials at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Aduwawa. He stated: “We have initiated the process to reclaim the people's mandate, and a petition has been lodged with the Edo State Election Tribunal. Despite various challenges, we have successfully filed the petition, as the APC's intention was to prevent us from doing so. The mandate entrusted to the PDP will be restored. “We have identified the core issues, and we are confident that the election tribunal will recognize our mandate based on the substantial evidence presented. “While our party was diligently compiling evidence for the petition, the APC and its chairman, Jarret Tenebe, were engaged in spreading falsehoods. He falsely claimed that the PDP was obstructing activities at the INEC office, neglecting to acknowledge that the process serves the interests of the PDP. Why would the PDP disrupt a procedure that benefits it? “If the APC genuinely won the governorship election on September 21st in Edo State, why are they creating chaos at the INEC office? Their lies lack credibility. “They are the ones hindering the process because it does not favor them. If you are victorious, why would you go to such lengths to prevent others from reviewing the process? Are you trying to conceal how you achieved your victory?”

Heartbreaking as Stranded Nigerian Super Eagles Players Sleeps On Libyan Airport Seats.

William Ekong, the captain of the Super Eagles, has shared images depicting the players resting at the airport. He conveyed his disappointment regarding the inadequate treatment the team has received from the Libyan authorities. He noted that the squad is stranded in a deserted airport, lacking access to food, water, or communication services. He stated, “After our plane was diverted during descent, we have spent over 12 hours in an abandoned airport in Libya. The Libyan government revoked our previously approved landing in Benghazi without explanation. The airport gates have been locked, leaving us without phone service, food, or beverages. This seems to be a tactic to play mind games. “While I have encountered difficulties in previous away matches in Africa, this situation is utterly unacceptable.”
