In Response to a Student's Death at Kwara Poly, the Police Have Taken Action Against Three Officers.
The trio consisting of Inspector Abiodun Kayode, Inspector James Emmanuel, and Sergeant Oni Philip has been dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force following allegations of the unlawful killing of Kwara State Polytechnic student, Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola.
A statement released on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Kwara State Police Command, DSP Ejire-Adeyemi Toun, on behalf of the state Commissioner of Police, Victor Olaiya, confirmed that the suspects will face trial in court.
In the statement titled “Final Update on the Case of Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola,” it was noted:
“The Kwara State Police Command wishes to provide a significant update regarding the investigation into the unfortunate incident resulting in the death of Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola on 4th September 2024.
“Following a comprehensive investigation and an internal disciplinary hearing, the three officers involved—AP/No 233828 INSPR. Abiodun Kayode, AP/No 287410 INSPR. James Emmanuel, and F/No 497868 SGT. Oni Philip—have been found guilty of several offenses: 1. Leaving Beat; 2. Corrupt Practices; 3. Unlawful or Unnecessary Exercise of Authority.
“As a result, they have been dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force, effective 4th October 2024, and will be brought before the court at the earliest opportunity.
“This decisive measure underscores the steadfast commitment of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, NPM, PhD, to maintaining justice, professionalism, and accountability within the Nigeria Police Force. Under his guidance, we are determined to ensure that officers uphold integrity, and any violation of ethical standards, especially in cases resulting in loss of life, will be addressed with the utmost seriousness.
“The Kwara State Police Command, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police CP Victor Olaiya, psc(+), extends heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola. We share in their sorrow and remain dedicated to offering support during this challenging time.”
It is important to remember that Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola, a 21-year-old student pursuing a degree in Electrical Electronics Engineering, was reportedly killed by police during a stop-and-search operation in the Fate area of Ilorin on September 4, 2024.
In response to this unfortunate incident, students from Kwara State Polytechnic organized a protest at the headquarters of the state Police Command and the government house, calling for justice.
