Police Spokesperson: The Police in Abia Have Started an Investigation to Find the Gunmen Who Killed Officers During an Attack.

Two officers from the Abia State Police Command, Inspectors Dunna Jatau and Bala Mohammed, were tragically killed by gunmen while performing their official duties on Sunday night in the Ubakala area of Umuahia, the capital of Abia State. A statement released on Monday by the police spokesperson, ASP Maureen Chinaka, indicated that the officers were ambushed by armed individuals dressed in black after they had dropped off Hon. Ginger Onwusibe, a member of the House of Representatives. The statement detailed, “On November 17, 2024, at approximately 20:30 hours, two officers from the Special Protection Unit Base 4, Makurdi—Inspector Dunna Jatau and Inspector Bala Mohammed—who were assigned to Hon. Ginger Onwusibe, representing the Nsiala-Ngwa North/South constituency, were attacked by armed assailants while on duty in Umuahia. “The officers were traveling in a police Toyota Hilux vehicle after escorting the Honourable Member in Umuahia. “While returning, near the Umuahia South Local Government Area Secretariat in Ubakala, their vehicle was intercepted by armed men in a Toyota Corolla with tinted windows.” The assailants reportedly blocked the road and opened fire on the officers. “Unfortunately, Inspector Bala Mohammed suffered multiple gunshot wounds and succumbed to his injuries at the scene, while Inspector Dunna Jatau and the driver were able to escape the attack,” the statement continued. In response to the incident, the police command has conducted a thorough search of the area and initiated a comprehensive operation to apprehend the attackers. Tactical teams have been deployed to pursue the fleeing suspects, and an investigation is currently underway. “The Abia State Police Command remains dedicated to ensuring that those responsible are brought to justice,” the statement concluded. Additionally, it was reported that last Wednesday, two soldiers lost their lives when gunmen assaulted an army checkpoint at the Ekenobizi community, located at the Imo/Abia boundary in Umuopara, Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia State.
