Support Workers at the Warri Refinery Threaten to Close Due to Unfavorable Working Conditions
A significant number of support personnel at the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company (WRPC) in Delta State have issued a warning to halt operations at the refinery on May 5, 2025, unless their requests for improved working conditions and equitable compensation are addressed. The employees, who have been advocating for their rights for nearly ten years, assert that they have endured what they term 'workplace slavery' and emotional distress.
Their monthly earnings are insufficient, ranging from ₦90,000 to ₦165,000. They report a lack of essential employment benefits and have been denied permanent staff status despite over a decade of service. The workers contend that WRPC's management and its parent organization, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, have failed to fulfill numerous commitments made since 2015. They have announced an indefinite protest and have set a deadline of May 5, 2025, for management to comply with their demands; otherwise, they will initiate a complete shutdown of the facility. The workers are advocating for complete emancipation from what they characterize as 'workplace slavery.' Despite numerous protests and mediation attempts by local leaders and senior officials, their demands remain unmet. The workers assert that management has not honored its commitments, and they are resolute in their intention to take significant measures to realize their objectives.
